Would You Tues: Head to Head

We're going to be switching up the Would You Tues series a bit this month. Philip and I have come up with a few random questions which we'll answer each week, and we'd love if you'd share your own insights in the comments or on Facebook (also as a note to this, we've been working on some behind the scenes blog work for a few months, and soon we'll hopefully have some new features that will make it easier for people on different devices to comment). 

Q1: If you found yourself in a back-lane, looking at an old bathtub, what would be your motivation for thievery?

Cass: We heard that some friends from our church used their old bath tub as a fire pit by burying it and having an inset place for bonfires. We couldn't do that in the city, but I love the idea!

Philip: I would be trying to recreate that Cialis ad picture of the two bathtubs overlooking the cliff. Of course, in that case it's acquiring the bathtubs that's the easy part; getting the plumbing to the edge of the cliff is the tougher piece of the puzzle. That, or having a few servants carting hot water over to the cliff; they'd have to be blind, of course--no peeking!--and that would further complicate matters...

Q2: What's the weirdest item on your birthday list?

Cass: It's a tie between Sim City 6 and a body pillow. Sim City 6 looks incredible, but I'm a grown woman who should probably embrace adulthood at some point. Still want it though peeps. Secondly, I sleep on my side with a pillow between my knees. Philip used to hate it and think it was weird, but now almost every night he curls up behind me and says, "Can I have some knee pillow?" I want a new body pillow so we can share easier! 

Philip: It's a weird fact about me that I'm a fan of novelty ice-cube trays. It's not that I'm such a big fan of having ice in my drink--as a kid growing up, we never seemed to have fresh ice cubes on hand--but I just think they're cool. They're one of the few kitchen implements that exhibits real creativity. To that end, I've put a Fred and Friends "Gin and Titonic" ice cube tray on my birthday list, so I can memorialize the loss of Jack Dawson and his 2,223 shipmates every time I want to cool a beverage. (Note: Philip's birthday is this upcoming Monday the 20th!)

Q3: What color do you want to paint the bathroom and why?

Cass: We already purchased glossy grey vanity, and white accessories galore, so we have a pretty neutral palette so far. Of the two rooms we've painted in this house, both have been hues of blue. Our bedroom is light blue-grey paired with a darker grey and dark accents along with our green and cream duvet. Our office is light blue and a darker blue. However, there's a reason - blue is really calming, it goes with most colors, and we both like it. I'm tempted to go with a blue/grey tone again in the bathroom. It would be really soothing and monochromatic in some ways with the grey and white. I've also debated black. That's me being a rebel. I think we could pull it off because there isn't a lot of paintable wall space when you take into account that one wall is almost all bath/shower, we have a window on another wall, a door on another, and the last wall has vanity, mirror, medicine cabinet, storage tower, etc. Almost all of those things are white. A dark color like black, charcoal, or even a really dark green or navy might just work. I think before I'm ready to decide I kind of want to draw it out from the looking at the vanity view and plan out our tile work and play with some colors once we've chosen floor and tile. 

Philip: You ready for a big surprise? I want to paint the bathroom....

Banana Yellow. It's bright! It's fun! It looks great with gloss gray (our vanity) and white (our cabinets, tub and shower)! I'd be willing to even fake-board and batten the walls (like John & Sherry over at YoungHouseLove did) to get a two-tone look with a little more white into the room! But how can you not go bananas for yellow? Here's another sentence with an exclamation mark!

Who did you agree/disagree with? Have any thoughts on our questions this week? I knew Philip wanted yellow, I could potentially be talked into something mustardier (add that word to the dictionary). Last week we sat down and planned a month of blog posts, so while we haven't been as consistent lately, there are some home events that you have to thank for that so we have lots to share!

The Great Bathtub Caper of 2013

I had intended to leave this post room today for Philip, until something unexpected happened about an hour ago...as you can tell from the title, it was bathtub heist related. 

Let's start at the beginning...when we were gutting our bathroom, we had loaded up a trailer with some of the discards including the old vanity, bathtub, and some general debris. The trailer wasn't even close to full, so we left it for a bit until we could continue our project and fill it up. Philip was in the middle of Dinner Theater at the time so we didn't have a lot of time for gutting and were taking our time. It turned out it was my aunt and uncle's trailer and they needed it for a project, so they came to get it and we just emptied it out. Next to our garage there's an extra parking pad, and so we just put it there for the time being - like rednecks, we had a bathtub in our back lane now. 

For a few months now, it's rested there safely and securely, waiting for the long awaited journey to the dump. 

Yesterday as we were pulling into the garage, I noticed that the vanity was tipped. Didn't think a lot of it, wind was really gusting that day so just assumed it tipped through a combination of gusting wind and supportive snow melting away. It wasn't in good condition and was headed for the dump anyway so I wasn't worried enough to go check it out. 

This morning, it was soo nice outside, so I went to do a little walk around the yard, especially as I noticed that almost our whole garden is uncovered in the back! Yesterday only about 1/4-1/3 was exposed from under the snow, and now the whole thing is! Anyway...back to the tub. 

All of a sudden I was thinking...there's the tipped vanity...but where is the tub?? 

I could be wrong here, but I'm pretty sure someone stole our back lane dumpster bound bathtub. This is hilarious to me. I don't know why. It was peach colored  peeling, been outside in the Winnipeg Winter elements for a couple of months, and really really heavy. How did they pull this off without us noticing? 

We don't really mind, it actually saves us a trip to the dump because the rest of the stuff has been tagging along in the garbage bin each week as it fits, and this was the main big thing to get rid of. I wish they would have knocked on the door and asked, we would have easily let them have it for free and could have made a new neighborly bond out of it. Now instead we know there is a weird bathtub stealing neighbor on the loose! 

I'm happy for them though. They got a free tub, they're probably feeling pretty triumphant. I hope they're going to use it for something cool, like a super ugly backyard planter, or a toboggan! I hope that each time they use it they feel joy at their back-lane find. 

Thank you neighbors for saving us a trip to the dump, next time knock, if you're into weird old bath tubs we probably have some other neat stuff that would tickle your fancy...we could have been friends.

I hope this really strange Friday post was enjoyable to you, this stolen bathtub has brought me a lot of laughs today and I just thought I'd pass them on.

Ikea again...

You may have noticed I wasn't here yesterday, and that's because I'm coming down with the sickness that has been attacking everyone I know. Haven't been out of bed yet today (it's 12:17 pm right now) and am currently hanging out in a pink tank top, underwear, and wool socks. Feeling good is all about looking good people. Anyway, I didn't want to leave you in a lurch, if you've been having trouble getting through your days without our house updates, as I'm sure most people in the world have been. It's a struggle, but if you just keep your mind on other things I'm sure you can cope. Otherwise feel free to email me and I'll give you a daily dose of me talking about our life. Excuse me if this post is ridiculous, I've been feeling kind of out of it.

Anyway, back to business. 

We went to Ikea again - surprise! This time is was to get our bathroom furniture/accessories. Just to clear things up, we do not only shop at Ikea...it's just new to Winnipeg and happens to be crazy reasonable so we're jumping on that bandwagon right now. If you have the money, I'd recommend buying your vanity probably at a real kitchen/bath store (cough Norcraft cough), as it's better quality...but Ikea is just too cheap to pass up. 

You'll remember from our post last week, we had our bathroom design all planned with the Ikea cabinetry in place.

We went to Ikea with my parents, and here's a rundown of what we bought:

1. The Godmorgon Vanity with Odvensik Countertop - the version with 2 square sinks, grey gloss
2. A Godmorgon Mirror
3. Lillangen Medicine Cabinet, horizontally hung with aluminum framed glass door
4. Grundtal glass shelf
5. Ensen faucets x 2
6. Lillangen high cabinet with aluminum framed glass door (in the picture above you see the fullen cabinet, when we got to the store it looked too cheap and didn't go with everything, so we decided to go with the lillangen to match the medicine cabinet).
7. Godmorgon acrylic drawer organizers...I couldn't resist. They're too amazing! Can't wait to get it all installed and show how organized the drawers are when I organize these babies. 

I want to say that's all we bought...but I feel like I could be forgetting something. 

8. I was...the Grundtal toilet roll holder.

9. & the Savern towel hanger.

While we were there, a lady also broke something glass everywhere...and walked away. For shame people, for shame. At least pay for what you broke, or find a sales associate and explain yourself. My mom immediately heard broken glass and assumed it'd be me - no, I was carrying a glass shelf around and it stayed in tact - Success!

If you feel like looking up each thing to see how much we spent - I think it came to around $1300 and something. I might have forgotten more things...but you'll see when it's all installed anyway! 

We also bought a bathtub and shower walls at Dynasty Bath, and we're working on ordering a beautiful new Kohler shower head and bath fixtures. Spoiler alert for Tuesday's "What are you looking forward to most in 2013?" - mine might have to be showering in a normal sized shower, and Philip's might be "my wife having room to shave properly in the shower again."
